چکیده

Host plant resistance assumes central role in pest management in order to increase production and productivity of the crops. Conventional breeding in conjunction with molecular techniques and transgenic approaches have a great promise to reduce pest associated crop losses, and accelerate the progress in developing cultivars with resistance to insects. Although, considerable progress has been made over the past two decades in manipulating genes from diverse sources to develop plants with resistance to insect pests, deployment of molecular techniques for insect resistance, understand nature of gene action and metabolic pathways, but rapid and cost effective development and adoption of biotechnology-derived products will depend on developing a full understanding on the interaction of genes within their genomic environment, and with the environment in which their conferred phenotype interact. A good beginning has been made in developing genetic linkage maps of many crops, but the accuracy and precision of phenotyping for resistance to insect pests remains a critical constraint in many crops. Improved phenotyping systems will have substantial impact on both conventional and biotechnological approaches to breed for resistance to insect pests, in addition to the more strategic research that feeds into these endeavors.

Current status and future perspectives on sunflower insect pests

 While occasional insect pests of cultivated sunflowers may be managed by conventional or reducedrisk insecticides, the cumulative costs and risks of relying on insecticides to suppress perennial or severe pests (common in North America) call for exploration of broader pest management strategies.  Recent research with the sunflower moth (Homoeosoma electellum [Pyralidae]) and banded sunflower...

Prospects for using transgenic resistance to insects in crop improvement

Integrated pest management has historically placed great hopes on host plant resistance. However, conventional host-plant resistance to insects involves quantitative traits at several loci. As a result, the progress has been slow and difficult to achieve. With the advent of genetic transformation techniques, it has become possible to clone and insert genes into the crop plants to confer resista...

Gene expression profiling of Arabidopsis thaliana in compatible plant-aphid interactions.

Phloem feeding involves unique biological interactions between the herbivore and its host plant. The economic importance of aphids, whiteflies, and other phloem-feeding insects as pests has prompted research to isolate sources of resistance to piercing-sucking insects in crops. However, little information exists about the molecular nature of plant sensitivity to phloem feeding. Recent discoveri...
